Charles A. B. Heinze II returns to Allenberry

When Charles A.B. Heinze entered Penn State in the mid 1920s with and eye towards a career in law, little could he have dreamed of Allenberry Resort Inn and Playhouse, a family business which now spans five generations. To pay his way through school Charles sold Wearever Aluminum from door to door. When cooking demonstrations whetted his appetite for the food business, he enrolled in the hotel administration course at Penn State. After graduation he worked with Matty Mateer, who owned and operated the State College Hotel, and provided Charles with much encouragement and guidance.

Charles returned to Carlisle where his family moved from Johnstown. Charles and his father, John, opened the Dairy Store on Hanover Street and they also owned and operated the Carlisle Inn from 1935 until 1951. During the war the two gentlemen were running a dining facility at Dickinson College for Air Cadets when they first heard of the Allenberry property in Boiling Springs, PA, which was a summer estate owned by Dr. Sadler of Carlisle.

Charles and his father purchased the historic Allenberry property in 1944. Several months later, Charles and his wife, Mary Lucinda, and their three children, John, Mary Jane, and Jere moved from Carlisle to their new home at Allenberry.

The father-son Heinze team originally planned for Allenberry to be a dining establishment. But that has certainly expanded over the years. The famous Allenberry Playhouse opened in 1949 and has provided professional Equity theatre to millions over the decades. Lodges, dining rooms, a pool, tennis courts, and many more amenities have been added over the years, first by Charles and his father and later by Charles' children.

Charles A.B. Heinze IINow sixty years after Charles A.B. Heinze founded Allenberry Resort Inn and Playhouse, his grandson and namesake has returned to play an important role in the daily operation and shaping the future of the popular south central Pennsylvania resort inn and playhouse. Allenberry has always been a family owned and operated business, and Charles A.B. Heinze II literally grew up on the operation. Even before he went to college Charles was Allenberry's Banquet and Catering supervisor.

During his sophomore year at Penn State University, he earned a Food and Beverage internship at Lowes L' Enfant Plaza in Washington D.C. In addition to his studies, during his junior and senior years at Penn State Charles was a Lead Server and Line Cook at the respected Tavern Restaurant in State College.

Upon graduation from Penn State, Charles joined the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans as a management trainee. He was first promoted to Executive Steward and became In-Room Dining manager in the nearly four years he was in New Orleans. Charles then headed west to Las Vegas where he became the Assistant Food and Beverage Director at the Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas Resort. He also operated as the Director of Banquets and Convention Services over the past five years before returning to Allenberry early 2005.

Jere Heinze & Charles A.B. Heinze IIAs Allenberry's new Director of Food and Beverage, Charles is the fourth generation of the Heinze family to hold a pivotal role in forming the future of the 60+ acre resort. Charles will join his father Jere, Allenberry's General Manager, in the daily operation of Allenberry's Food and Beverage Department. Charles and his family plan to live at Allenberry.
